History

The history of the 3 Zinnen Ski-Marathon dates back to 1975. At a meeting on 16 April at “Gasthof Hell” in Monguelfo, Paul Zingerle from Antholz presented the idea of a major popular cross-country ski race inspired by the Marcialonga. The vision was ambitious: a race that would inspire people from the entire Puster Valley and beyond to take up cross-country skiing. Even at that time, it was clear that such an event would require a major joint project and the commitment of many dedicated volunteers. The entry fee was intended to be between 3,000 and 4,000 lire, covering at least part of the organisational costs.

On 11 January 1976, the starting signal was given in San Candido for the first Pustertaler Ski-Marathon. From today’s perspective, the route was almost unimaginable: more than 60 kilometres from San Candido via Dobbiaco, Villabassa, Braies, Monguelfo, Valdaora and Rasun to Anterselva di Mezzo. Over the years, this bold idea developed into an important fixture on the international cross-country skiing calendar. With more than 2,000 participants at its peak, the race achieved an impressive record number of participants. At the same time, the event repeatedly presented major challenges for the organisers. Snow conditions in particular made it necessary to modify the route several times over the decades and often led to discussions and difficult decisions.

       "3

Today, we look back on 50 years filled with stories, people and memories. The Ski-Marathon has not only shaped generations of cross-country skiers, but has also made a significant contribution to the development of the Puster Valley and the Dolomites region as an important cross-country skiing destination. Many kilometres of trails, numerous events and an entire cross-country skiing culture are closely connected to this history.

The Pustertaler Ski-Marathon was first held in 1976, making it the oldest popular cross-country ski race in South Tyrol! The event has since been officially renamed the “3 Zinnen Ski-Marathon”.
